DECISION REASON & PENALTY
--Apprentice C Grylls (assisted by Mr S McKee) admitted a breach of Rule 871 (1) (d) in that he permitted his mount BRINGBACKTHEBIFF to shift inwards in the straight when not sufficiently clear of SANDHAWK (ridden by Mr R Norvall) taking that horse's rightful line of running and causing a check to SANDHAWK who was forced on to SKANDELL ridden by Ms T Thornton.
--Assistant Stipendiary Steward Mr Robinson demonstrated the incident on the video of the inward movement when not sufficiently clear of SANDHAWK who was checked. No corrective measures were taken by Mr Grylls who continued to use the whip. There was also a check to the horse SKANDELL (Ms T Thornton) on the inside of SANDHAWK. Mr Robinson said the inwards movement was about two widths and it closed a gap that SANDHAWK was entitled to but was slowly taking advantage of.
--Mr S McKee stated that this slow action of SANDHAWK should be considered as part of the penalty deliberations.
--Stipendiary Steward Mr Oatham made submissions on penalty in that Mr Grylls had admitted the breach and that this was not at the higher end of careless riding. However he suggested that a suspension was appropriate and that Mr Grylls often rode in the central districts.
--Mr McKee asked that the panel take Mr Grylls' good record into account and that he did take rides in the South Island.
--The panel took these submissions into consideration including admission of the breach and that this was at the lower end of careless riding. However as no corrective measures had been taken by Mr Grylls a suspension was required. Mr C Grylls is suspended from riding from the conclusion of racing on Saturday 22nd September until the conclusion of racing on Thursday 27th September. This for Mr Grylls was effectively a 3 day suspension.
