--
Following the running of Race 5, a protest was lodged by Mr P Harris, trainer of Adelariva, against horse number 8, Knots (J Todd), placed 1st by the Judge, on the grounds of interference to his charge, number 7, Adelariva (M Carston), placed 3rd by the Judge, on the grounds of interference over the concluding stages.
----The placings were: 8 - 14 - 7 - 6 - 9 - 1, and the margins were nose, short neck.
----Before introducing his evidence, Mr Harris agreed that the video of the concluding stages be shown to the connections. This was described by the stipendiary stewards who pointed out the respective positions of Adelariva (M Carston) and Knots (J Todd) and the alleged interference.
----Mr Harris then interpreted the incident. He said that, in the run home, Mr Todd’s horse continued to come over under a vigorous ride, they touched twice in the run home, and Ms Carston was unable to ride her horse out as she is entitled to do. With the margin of a short neck, he believed this cost her a better place.
----Ms Carston echoed Mr Harris’ comments and said she was only able to hit her horse once with Knots rolling in.
----Mrs Morton, for the connections of Knots, said that Ms Carston’s horse also moved and the horses only brushed when they came together. She was supported by licensed trainer, Mr Coulbeck, who described the incident as only a ‘brush and a bump’.
----Part-owner of Knots, Mr Molloy, commented that he did not believe that Ms Carston had to stop riding her horse.
------
The rider of Knots, Mr Todd, then gave his view. He said he made his run and the horse did move in but he straightened, he pulled straight out, and Ms Carston never had to stand up or take hold, or ease. He said that she was never bumped off line and, in fact, they just brushed.
----To conclude matters, stipendiary steward, Mr Ching, was invited to give his interpretation of the incident.
----He said it was clear there was contact between Adelariva and Knots two or three times and he believed Ms Carston has been inconvenienced but the horses were racing in tight quarters and it was the committee’s decision as to whether or not it was sufficient to affect the placings.
----Decision:
----Given the close proximity to the next race, a brief decision was given with advice that a full written decision would be available later.
----In this case, trainer Mr Harris has protested against the first-placed horse, Knots (J Todd) on the grounds of interference over the concluding stages to his horse, Adelariva (M Carston), placed third in the race.
----Evidence was heard from both jockeys and the connections, and the video of the incident was interpreted by the parties.
----The committee accepts that Knots did move in on Adelariva and there was some minor bumping or brushing whilst they were racing in tight quarters, but we are not convinced it cost the horse a higher placing. We note that Ms Carston continues to ride the horse out and, indeed, her forward momentum is not impeded. Whilst we agree that there was some inconvenience, we find it was interference of a minor nature and, notwithstanding the margin, we are not satisfied it was sufficient to consider altering the placings. The protest is dismissed, and the placings remain:-
----1. 8 Knots
--2. 14 Miss Key
--3. 7 Adelariva
--4. 6 Step We Gaily
--5. 9 Strike It Lucky
--6. 1 High Tide
