Following the running of Race 2, the Harcourts Otaki Highweight, Stipendiary Steward, Mr N Goodwin presented an Information charging Mr T Johnson, a Licensed Rider, with excessive use of the whip a breach of Rule 638(3)(b(ii).
Mr Johnson has signed the Information admitting the charge.
Mr Goodwin identified Mr Johnson’s mount REX ROYALE and demonstrated from race film that, prior to the 100 metre point, he struck his mount 10 times with the whip (and 6 of these in succession). The horse finished in second place.

Mr Goodwin contended that a suspension was appropriate given the revised Whip Guidelines (where there are 10 or strikes a starting point of 6 national riding days is recommended).
Mr Johnson accepted that he had to be suspended but said he had had no previous breaches of the Rule.
