Otago RC 6 March 2021 – R 8 – Chair, Mr P Knowles
ID: JCA13904
Code:
Thoroughbred
Meet Title:
Otago RC - 6 March 2021
Meet Chair:
PKnowles
Meet Committee Member 1:
GHall
Race Date:
2021/03/06
Race Number:
R8
Decision:
Mr Campbell admitted the charge and it is found proved.
Penalty:
Mr Campbell’s request for an 8 day deferment is granted and his apprentice jockey’s licence is suspended from the end of racing on the 14th March up to and including the 21st March (5 National days) and fined $250.
Facts:
Mr C Campbell was charged with a breach of careless riding following Race 8. Stewards alleged that Mr Campbell rode carelessly - r 638 (1) (d) when he shifted his mount Zabay wider on the turn about the 400 metres when insufficiently clear of Hee’s Our Secret (J Lowry) which was checked. Mr Campbell admitted the breach and appeared at the hearing.
Mr McIntyre, with the aid of the video replays, stated Zabay was placed near the rear of the field but about two horse widths out from the running rail. He said Mr Campbell shifted his mount outwards but was never clear of Hee’s Our Secret. Mr Lowry was forced to check his mount and in doing so Hee’s Our Secret clipped the heels of another runner.
Mr Walsh stated that there was not a lot of movement by Mr Campbell but he just overdid it a fraction. Mr Campbell stated he was trying to get off the back of a forward runner and came out a bit sharp.
Submissions for Penalty:
Mr Davidson stated Mr Campbell had two previous careless riding charges, the most recent at Southland in February where he received a 6 days suspension and a $500 fine. Stewards viewed the breach as mid-range and were seeking a 4-5 day suspension and a fine between $250 and $500. He is a busy apprentice jockey and his record is very good.
Mr Campbell requested an 8 day deferment as he had committed rides over that period.
Reasons for Penalty:
Mr Campbell is a busy apprentice and has a very good record despite a suspension in February. We view the incident as mid-range and a suspension with a fine at the lower end of the scale is appropriate.
