Under Rule 871 (1) (d) Stipendiary Steward Mr M Davidson alleged that Mr J Laking, rider of CANTERBURY KNIGHT, allowed his mount to shift ground outwards when not sufficiently clear, causing a check to FREDDY HEENAN, ridden by A Munday.
--Mr Laking admits the breach. Video evidence confirmed this.
--Submissions as to penalty were taken. Mr Davidson said Mr Laking had only one charge upheld under this rule in the past 12 months - this was a six day suspension on 30 December 2007 at Omakau. He also said the stewards felt this was a mid range offence and, giving credit for his early admission, they were seeking a 3 to 5 day suspension.
--Mr Laking felt 5 days was excessive as he had only been suspended for 6 days in the major incident at Omakau.
--DECISION :
--Giving credit for Mr Laking's early admission and taking a 3 day suspension as an absolute minimum and given the degree of interference, in this case we suspend Mr Laking's licence from the end of racing today up to and including Thursday 17th April 2008, a total of 4 South island riding days.
