--Mr Goodwin, stipendiary steward, explained that Mr Bates had indicated to the stewards early in the day that he might struggle to make the weight for SHOWUSYAHALO in Race 5. At the time of weighing out Mr Bates was 1 kg over. Mr Bates explained he had had health issues yesterday and he had not had the opportunity to take the exercise he normally would have taken. He said he had lost 3 kgs in the sauna this morning but had been unable, despite his best endeavours, to make the weight. He said he could generally get to his carded weight of 53.5 kg.
--Mr Goodwin suggested a fine of $100. Having regard to Mr Bates excellent record with respect to this Rule, his health problem yesterday, and his ready admission of the breach, we agree with Mr Goodwin that a fine of $100 will hold Mr Bates accountable on this occasion. However, we remind Mr Bates of his obligations to the connections of the horse and the general public who are entitled to expect that Mr Bates will honour his riding commitments.
