Mr Ching, stipendiary steward, sought a ruling with respect to a disputed riding engagement in race 2
--
Mr Ching, stipendiary steward, sought a ruling with respect to a disputed riding engagement in race 2 in that Mr A N Jenkins had been nominated to ride both MILITIA (Mr Thompson) and CRAFTY CAT (Mr Harris).
----Mr Harris was unable to be present and was represented by Ms Winkie Sisson. She stated that Mr Harris was clear in his advice to her that riders had been engaged for all members of his team for the day. Mr Ching indicated that he had spoken the previous day to Mr Harris, who was in Australia, and Mr Harris had said that as far as he was concerned he had a definite undertaking from Mr Jenkins to ride CRAFTY CAT. He said that on the 20th of June, nomination day for Riccarton, he had asked Mr Jenkins to ride CRAFTY CAT at both that meeting and at Oamaru, and Mr Jenkins had said "yes". CRAFTY CAT was subsequently scratched from Riccarton on the 22nd and when he spoke to Mr Jenkins on that day Mr Jenkins had said he was still ok for Oamaru.
----Mr Thompson said he had engaged Mr Jenkins to ride MILITIA prior to withdrawals on the 28th. He said he had a definite undertaking from Mr Jenkins to ride his horse.
----Mr Jenkins said he had never given an undertaking to Mr Harris to ride CRAFTY CAT at Oamaru. When questioned by the Committee, he stated that he had said to Mr Harris when they spoke on the 22nd that he would get back to him. He never did. Equally, it appears Mr Harris did not speak to Mr Jenkins subsequent to this time.
----Having regard to Mr Jenkins' statement that he is adamant that he did not give Mr Harris an undertaking that he would ride CRAFTY CAT at Oamaru, and in light of the fact he has a clear commitment to ride MILITIA for Mr Thompson, we rule that Mr Jenkins ride MILITIA. The result is unfortunate for the connections of CRAFTY CAT in that we have been informed there is no replacement rider available for the horse and it appears it may have to be late scratched. This is clearly an unsatisfactory state of affairs for all concerned. Mr Harris may in fact have no rider for CRAFTY CAT through no fault of his own. Mr Ching has indicated that the matter of the disputed engagement will be investigated further upon Mr Harris' return from Australia.
