Meet Committee Member 1:

Race Date:
2020/02/07

Race Number:
R 4

Decision:

As Ms Collett admitted the breach, it was deemed to be proved.

Penalty:

Accordingly, Ms Collett’s license is suspended from the close of racing on Wednesday, February 12th up to and including racing on Sunday, February 16th.

Facts:

Following the running of Race 4 (Aranui Harvesters 1550), an Information was lodged by Mr Goodwin alleging a breach of Rule 638(1)(d) in that S Collett allowed her mount LADY RUDOLPH to shift out near the 350m when not clear of ITALIAN LOVER and SKYPHYTA which were checked.

Ms Collett confirmed her understanding of the charge and her admission of the breach.

Mr Goodwin used all available video angles to explain the incident. On rounding the home bend, Ms Collett was in a position 1-off the rail with Mrs Allpress (ITALIAN LOVER) behind and 3 horse-widths to her outside. On the point of the turn, Ms Collett angled out when not clear of ITALIAN LOVER forcing Mrs Allpress to check her mount. Ms Collet’s mount continued to move out and tightened SKYPHYTA.

Ms Collett did not deny there was interference but explained that she had issues getting around the tight bend at Awapuni. Her horse “wobbled” around the corner, and when she attempted to correct her line of running, she overcorrected. As a result, LADY RUDOLF ran out further than she was anticipating.

Submissions for Penalty:

Mr Goodwin presented Ms Collett’s riding record, which showed she has had 962 rides in the last 12 months with no careless riding charges within that time. He described her level of carelessness as low end, with many horses drifting out on the bend. The Stewards’ submission was for a period of suspension.

Ms Collett said LADY RUDOLF has a tendency to be awkward and explained earlier the difficulty she had negotiating the corner.

She advised of riding commitments up until Wednesday next week.

Reasons for Penalty:

The Committee considered all submissions.

Both Ms Collett and Mr Goodwin made mention of the home corner and the faster track throwing horses wide today. We note that Ms Collett made an attempt to hold her line but was unsuccessful and caused interference to 2 runners. In our opinion, the incident was at the low end of carelessness, and therefore we adopted a starting point of 6 days in line with Judicial Penalty Guide.

Ms Collett’s record is exceptional. She is one of the busiest riders in the country, and her last careless riding charge was in January 2019. We have given her considerable credit for this record along with her admission of the breach.

Balancing all factors, including the fact that Ms Collett will miss out on a premier day at Ellerslie, it was the opinion of the Committee that a suspension of 4 days was an appropriate penalty.
