Invercargill HRC - 10 March 2006

Race Date:
2006/03/10

Race Number:
Race 4

Decision: --

A Protest was lodged by Stipendiary Steward, Mr P Knowles, at the conclusion of Race 4, alleging that with approximately 1200m to run, JACKA WILLIAM ran outwards coming into contact with WHATA WILLIE causing that horse to knuckle over and check ADVANCE ATOM and LIVING PRIDE.

--

DECISION & REASON:

--

A Protest was lodged by Stipendiary Steward, Mr P Knowles, at the conclusion of Race 4, alleging that with approximately 1200m to run, JACKA WILLIAM ran outwards coming into contact with WHATA WILLIE causing that horse to knuckle over and check ADVANCE ATOM and LIVING PRIDE.

--

Mr Knowles used several video clips of the alleged incident, highlighting (in his opinion) where the incident occurred. He maintained that the abrupt outward movement of JACKA WILLIAM, No.2, caused WHATA WILLIE, No.5, to knuckle over, thereby checking LIVING PRIDE, No.12, which broke and caused further interference to ADVANCE ATOM, No.8, which broke as well, extinguishing its chances.

--

Mr Jones, when questioned stated that his horse was lugging in at the time and broke free of interference. Mr Norman stated that his horse WHATA WILLIE was affected by the movement but only to the extent of losing approximately one length. Mr Armour, driver of JACKA WILLIAM stated that whilst his horse had caused interference to WHATA WILLIE, it in turn did not cause LIVING PRIDE to break, and supported Mr Jones' evidence.

--

The Committee were of the opinion that clearly interference had occurred and that it was caused by JACKA WILLIAM's outward movement on to WHATA WILLIE, which in turn caused both LIVING PRIDE and ADVANCE ATOM to break and lose considerable ground, and effectively their chances.

--

For this reason the protest was upheld.

--

The Committee did not agree with Mr Jones's summary of the events and believed that the video evidence clearly supported this decision.
