At the conclusion of race 4, the Invercargill Workouts Pace, a protest was lodged by Stipendiary Steward Mr C J Allison, alleging that the second placed horse, by the judge, DAY IN LIEU, driven by J W Cox, shortly after the start broke and veered inwards sharply checking JUST ROSEBUD driven by C Hanna. BELTURBET driven by J Hackett and MARK BAILEY, driven by R Gorman.
--Stipendiary Steward Mr Knowles used several video clips to highlight the alleged interference, identifying DAY IN LEIU, the alleged movement inwards and, in his opinion, the extinguishing of the chances of JUSTA ROSEBUD, BELTURBET and MARK BAILEY.
--Mr Hanna, driver of JUSTA ROSEBUD, stated that his horse began cleanly and kept its racing line until DAY IN LIEU veered in sharply, effectively wiping his horse out. Mr Hanna stated that his horse had not contributed to the incident.
--Mr Barron, trainer of BELTURBET, stated that his horse had started on the second line draw, began well, but shortly after cannoned into JUSTA ROSEBUD as a result of the movement inwards from DAY IN LIEU. Mr Allison stated that BELTURBET finished 46 lengths from the winner and JUST ROSEBUD 52 lengths from the winner.
--Mr Cox stated that DAY IN LIEU threw his head about as the tapes were released and as a result veered in sharply, effectively extinguishing the chances of JUSTA ROSEBUD, BELTURBET and MARK BAILEY.
--Miss Richardson, trainer of DAY IN LIEU, also agreed that her horse had unfortunately hampered the chances of the horses as previously stated.
--DECISION :
--The protest was upheld and as a result DAY IN LIEU was disqualified, JACKMANDOO was promoted to second placing and RUSSLANDS to third placing.
--Clearly, in my opinion, DAY IN LIEU has veered inwards, effectively extinguishing the chances of JUSTA ROSEBUD, BELTURBET and MARK BAILEY.
