Mr R. Stam admitted a charge of excessive use of the whip under rule 530(2)(b) in relation to his ride on GEE GEE TOPS

Mr R. Stam admitted a charge of excessive use of the whip under rule 530(2)(b) in relation to his ride on GEE GEE TOPS in the Best United Travel Dash.
--Aided by the films of the finish Stipendiary Steward Mr Goodwin asserted that Mr Stam used his whip in an unnecessary and excessive manner over the final 100 metres when GEE GEE TOPS was 3-4 lengths last and well beaten. Of particular concern were the 11-13 obviously forceful strikes close to the line.
--Mr Stam observed that he and his partner trained the horse and its performance was hugely frustrating and he had lost his cool and taken it out on the horse.
--On the issue of penalty Mr Goodwin advised Mr Stam had not been charged under this rule in the last 12 months but nevertheless regarded the excessive use to be at the top end and deserving of a two week suspension.
--Mr Stam conceded the points made by Mr Goodwin. The Committee considers that the excessive and unnecessary use of the whip on this occasion was a woefully unacceptable and inappropriate lapse of horsemanship which warranted a term of suspension. After giving some credit to Mr Stam for his frank and forthright admission of the matter he is suspended from the close of racing on 2 January 2008 until the close of racing on 17 January 2008.
