Mr Riddell, rider of BLACK EAGLE placed 2nd by the Judge protested against the first placing of MR BOJANGLES on the grounds of interference at the last fence.

Mr Riddell, rider of BLACK EAGLE placed 2nd by the Judge protested against the first placing of MR BOJANGLES on the grounds of interference at the last fence. The horses had jumped the last fence together. Mr Riddell stated that MR BOJANGLES had moved out into his line while jumping the last fence which had cost him momentum and, in his view, 1st placing. He demonstrated the incident on both the side and head on videos. He said the conditions were trying for the horses. Mr Moseley, jockey, represented Mr Hughes, trainer of BLACK EAGLE. He, like Mr Riddell, emphasised the difference in weight carried by the 2 horses and said it would have been more difficult for BLACK EAGLE with its heavier weight to pick itself up and run on. He said the horse had done well in the circumstances.
----Mr Belsham, rider of MR BOJANGLES stated that the movement was not great and that the margin of 2 lengths was such that the Committee should not even consider amending the placings. Mr McKay supported Mr Belsham's comments.
----Mr Ching, stipendiary steward, stated the movement from MR BOJANGLES had to be considered in the context of the margin at the finish.
----It was evident from the videos that both horses were tired and under the urgings of Mr Belsham, MR BOJANGLES had run down the last fence and in so doing had forced BLACK EAGLE wider on the track. There was a momentary loss of momentum by BLACK EAGLE but Mr Riddell was not severely inconvenienced. We consider there was interference to BLACK EAGLE and that the cause of this was movement from MR BOJANGLES. The margin at the finish was 2 lengths and while BLACK EAGLE was slowly taking ground off MR BOJANGLES, Mr Belsham was clearly easing his horse down towards the line. We do not believe the outwards movement from MR BOJANGLES cost BLACK EAGLE first place and in these circumstances we exercise our discretion and leave the placings as the horses crossed the line.
----The filing fee is refunded.
