| -- The charge was admitted. --Jockey J Gillies was charged that he made a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post. --Stipendiary Steward K Hawea informed the committee that the films that were shown clearly showed Jockey Gillies short of the line waving his whip. It was Gillies first charge under this rule and for consistency asked for a monetary penalty of $300. --Jockey Gillies told the committee that the gesture was just short of the line. His mother had just recently died and it was his first day back riding after her death. The gesture was simply one of emotion. --DECISION AND REASON --The committee in arriving at its decision to fine Jockey Gillies took into account that this was his first charge under the rule and his admittance of the charge. The committee acknowledged that it was an emotional gesture but informed Mr Gillies the rules are quite clear and are put there not only for his safety but for the safety of his fellow riders. --Jockey Gillies was fined the sum of $300. |
