Race 8

Decision: Following the running of Race 8, Mr T.Johnson was charged with careless riding under rule 871 (1) (d).  The information alleged T.Johnson being the rider of XTRABELT allowed his mount to shift outwards when not sufficiently clear

Following the running of Race 8, Mr T.Johnson was charged with careless riding under rule 871 (1) (d).  The information alleged T.Johnson being the rider of XTRABELT allowed his mount to shift outwards when not sufficiently clear causing ALPHA PUKEKO to check in the final straight.

--

--

Mr Johnson admitted the breach and was represented by his employer Mr K.Gray.

--

--

Mr Goodwin asked Mr Davidson to show the incident by way of the films.  He showed how Mr Johnson allowed his mount to drift outwards five to six horse widths eventually causing Mr Hannam to check his mount. The side-on film showed Mr Johnson making no attempt to straighten his mount and ALPHA PUKEKO having to check off his heels.

--

--

Mr Goodwin told the committee that Mr Johnson had no previous charges of careless riding but on this occasion he had his sights set on winning the race and consequently had been over exuberant with his ride.  It was the opinion of the Stewards that Mr Johnson’s penalty should be a suspension of not less than three days.

--

Mr Gray asked the committee to take into account Mr Johnson’s very good riding record and the fact that XTRABELT is a difficult horse to ride.  Other riders have had no luck riding her and this incident was not all Mr Johnson’s fault.

--

--

--

- The considerable movement outwards with little attempt to straighten his mount.

--

--

Mr Johnson is suspended from racing from the conclusion of racing on Saturday April 26th 2008 until the conclusion of racing on Friday May 2nd 2008.
