Decision: --

Under rule 876 (1) Jockey M Hills, rider of ESSENTIAL WOMAN, trained by Mr C Ritchie, and placed 4th by the judge, filed a protest against the 2nd placed horse TAMARA KARSAVINA

Under rule 876 (1) Jockey M Hills, rider of ESSENTIAL WOMAN, trained by Mr C Ritchie, and placed 4th by the judge, filed a protest against the 2nd placed horse TAMARA KARSAVINA ridden by Mr T Russell and trained by G Rogerson and G Newham.

--

--

Mr Hills stated that in the straight TAMARA KARSAVINA shifted in and caused ESSENTIAL WOMAN to be checked for 3 - 4 strides and that as the margin between the 3rd and 4th horses was a long neck that his mount's chances of finishing in a better position were affected. Mr Hills demonstrated the incident on the video. Mr Ritchie agreed with the loss of a better placing and stated that ESSENTIAL WOMAN was a one paced horse.

--

Mr Russell admitted his horse shifted in but the horse on his inside, ridden by Miss D Johnson, had already made contact with ESSENTIAL WOMAN. ESSENTIAL WOMAN then had the opportunity of improving and this was supported by Mr Newham who stated that Miss D Johnson's mount ARIA DE RITZ had contributed to the incident.

--

Stipendiary Steward Mr Coles made comment that the panel had to decide whether the part played in the incident was enough to affect the margin of a long neck.

--

The panel took these submissions into consideration including viewing the video replay of the incident and in reaching a decision noted that although there was some interference by TAMARA KARSAVINA that ARIA DE RITZ was involved initially in the inward movement. There was opportunity for ESSENTIAL WOMAN to improve in the run to the post and we consider that the chances of ESSENTIAL WOMAN were not affected by the inward movement of TAMARA KARSAVINA. It is our considered opinion that TAMARA KARSAVINA should not be relegated. The protest is dismissed and we order that the protest deposit be refunded.
