Race Date:

Race 4

Decision: --

As a result of an incident shortly after the start of Race 4 at Riccarton on Saturday 31st March 2007, Ms J Cameron was charged with careless riding pursuant to Rule 871 (1) (d) of the Rules of Racing.

--

As a result of an incident shortly after the start of Race 4 at Riccarton on Saturday 31st March 2007, Ms J Cameron was charged with careless riding pursuant to Rule 871 (1) (d) of the Rules of Racing. It was alleged that Ms Cameron allowed her mount to move inwards causing MAKAMAK to clip a heel and nearly fall.

--

Ms Cameron admitted the charge which is therefore deemed to be proved.

--

Ms Cameron rode CROSS DA CAPE and was drawn 16 in a field of 17.

--

The incident was demonstrated to us by Mr Ching from the head on camera and the "start cam". Ms Cameron's inward movement was sharp and she went across the path of MAKAMAK. That horse clipped a heel with its rider Ms A M Mundy very nearly being dislodged.

--

In explanation Ms Cameron said that her horse jumped well, that she was clear of the two riders in front of her which were on the inside of the line of MAKAMAK. She said she didn?t see MAKAMAK.

--

SUBMISSIONS ON PENALTY

--

Mr Ching told us that Ms Cameron has been fined on two occasions in the last 12 months for careless riding but that in this case he considered matters to be more serious and that a suspension of 2 ? 4 days was called for.

--

Ms Cameron requested that a fine be imposed as she has a number of rides coming up in the next month. She did not consider her record to be that bad.

--

PENALTY DECISION

--

This was a poor bit of riding. Ms Cameron admitted, and I quote her, "it was a bad case of misjudgement". Ms Mundy was most fortunate not to have been dislodged and indeed it was most fortunate that MAKAMAK was not brought down. Mr Ching might have been justified in bringing a more serious charge of reckless riding.

--

We give Ms Cameron credit for her guilty plea. We also commend her for having apologised to Ms Mundy.

--

Notwithstanding those mitigating factors we must be consistent in the imposition of penalty. The imposition of a fine is not an option. We are duty bound to impose a suspension.

--

The suspension will be set at 4 days and commences from the conclusion of racing today 31st March 2007 until the conclusion of racing on Thursday 19th April. That encompasses meetings at Riverton on the 7th and 9th April, Canterbury Racing on the 14th April and the Wairio Jockey Club meeting at Invercargill on the 19th April.

--

As a final note, we add that we were minded to impose a fine in addition to the suspension because of the seriousness of the incident but having regard to Ms Cameron's remorse and her apology to Ms Mundy we have decided not to add that additional penalty.
