Following race 5 an information was lodged by Stipendiary Steward, Mr S Ching, against jockey Ms Lisa Young under rule 520 (4)( c) alleging she failed to make the declared weight for the horse REQUEST A HALO
Following race 5 an information was lodged by Stipendiary Steward, Mr S Ching, against jockey Ms Lisa Young under rule 520 (4)( c) alleging she failed to make the declared weight for the horse REQUEST A HALO, being 1kg overweight.
--Ms Young admitted the charge which was therefore deemed to be proved.
--Mr Ching told the committee that Ms Young had approached him about half an hour prior to race 5 stating that she could not make the carded weight of 55.5kg. A replacement jockey, Ms Tracey Newton, was engaged for REQUEST A HALO.
--Ms Young said to the committee that she had ridden half a kilogram over in an earlier race, felt dehydrated, and had a drink which resulted in her weight being 1 kilogram over for race 5.
--PENALTY:
--Mr Ching told the committee that Ms Young had appeared on similar charges on three occasions in the previous nine months. She had been fined each time and the fines ranged from $150 to $500. He considered a suspension was now the more appropriate penalty.
--Ms Young did not have anything to contribute to the discussion of the penalty.
--After taking all the matters into consideration the committee agreed that a suspension was the appropriate penalty. Repeat offending must attract a more severe penalty. In this instance the committee believed that a suspension of 3 riding days was the appropriate penalty. Ms Young had confirmed in the hearing that she rides in the South Island only. Ms Young was suspended from the conclusion of racing today (7 September 2007) until the conclusion of racing on Saturday 22 September. That period encompasses racing at Geraldine, 16 September, Winton, 21 September, and Canterbury, 22 September.
