Facts:
"Crystal Duke" ridden by DG Bradley, was drawn in Barrier position 12 in the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup. The horse proved to be troublesome in being loaded into the starting barrier. Once loaded, it continued to be fractious. A fraction of a second before the starting gates were released, "Crystal Duke" reared in the stalls, and had it not been for the quick response of the barrier attendant it could well have reared over the back of the stalls. The end result was that "Crystal Duke", lost several lengths at the start, and indeed, finished well back in the field.
Mr Bradley said that he could not attribute any blame to anyone or anything for the horse's behaviour and said that there was no other factor which affected the horses chances. Mr K Hughes, the trainer of "Crystal Duke" concurred with Mr Bradley's interpretation of the situation.

Reasons for Decision:
There was no mechanical failure of the starting stalls, and "Crystal Duke" was not denied a fair start by any other factor. The horse, by virtue of its behaviour was slow away of its own accord.
