On Sunday 30th December 2007 the Cambridge Te Awamutu Harness Racing Club was scheduled to run an eleven race card at the Waipa Racing Clubs Course at Te Awamutu
--Immediately prior to race three which ran at 3.14 pm a power outage occurred throughout the Te Awamutu District.
--This impacted on the race meeting in that all power on course was lost and subsequently TAB betting and race commentary coverage/cameras were not functioning.
--No emergency back up power generation was available
--Initial enquiries with the Power Authority could not source the cause of the power loss or an estimate of a likely time of resumption of power supply.
--Following initial discussions with Club Secretary/Judge Mr Kerry Wells, HRNZ Race Course Inspector Mr Rod Carmichael and stipendiary Stewards Messrs Taumanu and Muirhead it was decided to open a discussion with affected parties to consider a decision to abandon the race meeting pursuant to Rule 707 (3)(b)
--Consequently a meeting was held with the above together with Chairman Mr Barry Gordon, other Cambridge Te Awamutu HRC committee members, and the TAB field manager.
--It was generally agreed that the current situation was placing the continued competent operation of the race meeting in jeopardy and that all racing would be suspended until 5pm when a decision on the continuation of the meeting would be made.
--In the event that no suitable assurance on resumption of service could be given by 5 pm I decided that the meeting would be abandoned.
--Prior to 5 pm the only information supplied by the Power Authority was that there was still no identified cause of the outage and that resumption of normal supply could take between 1 and 18 hours.
--Subsequently all affected parties were advised that the race meeting would be abandoned.
--This report is supplied in case there is some discussion or criticism regarding the facts surrounding the decision made
