Race Number:
Race 10
Decision: --
An information was lodged by Stipendiary Steward Mr T TAUMANU alleging Junior Driver A SHARPE used his whip excessively
An information was lodged by Stipendiary Steward Mr T TAUMANU alleging Junior Driver A SHARPE used his whip excessively on PARISIAN PETRA during the concluding stages of Race 10.
--Mr Sharpe appeared before the hearing supported by Horseman Mr C DE FILIPPI and admitted the breach.
--Video footage of the concluding stages of the race showed in excess of 30 whip strikes on PARISIAN PETRA over the final 150 metres with the horse crossing the line in 7th place
--Mr Taumanu submitted that although the force used was not excessive the continuous unabated use of the whip was not good horsemanship and would contribute to undoing the good work and effort a trainer put into preparing his horses. It did not allow the driver the opportunity to assess the impact as there was no let up in the whipping action.
--Mr Sharpe said the horse had a tendency to hang in and his striking of the horse on its left side had been done in an effort to straighten it up
--Mr De Filippi submitted that it was Mr Sharpe's first offence and that there was no excessive force used. Mr Sharpe had readily admitted his fault and this should be taken into account together with his Junior driver status.
--Mr Taumanu agreed with the submissions made on Mr Sharpe's behalf and suggested a fine would be too severe. However he was looking for a salutary lesson to indicate the stance taken against offending and requested the Committee impose a 2 day suspension
--Decision
--Taking into account the submissions of both parties Junior Driver A SHARPE has his horseman's licence suspended until after racing on the 11th August 2006.
--Jeff Holloway
--Chairman
--28th July 2006.
