--
Mr Ching alleged that Ms Yamamoto was guilty of careless riding in that she allowed her mount COME ON JIMMY to shift in when not clear causing OUR MONA LISA to clip a heel and check near the 1150 metres.
--Ms Yamamoto has admitted the breach. We thus find the charge of careless riding proved.
--Mr Ching had Mr Davidson, stipendiary steward, demonstrate the incident on the video. He identified Ms Yamamoto as having started from the outside gate and then commencing an angled run across the field, when not sufficiently clear. In so doing she crowded the horses on her inner, and in particular, Ms Moore on OUR MONA LISA, which clipped a heel and checked. Mr Ching acknowledged there was also some movement from the inner but this was secondary to Ms Yamamoto’s inwards movement. Mr Ching asked for a 4 to 6 day suspension.
--Mr Hazlett spoke on Ms Yamamoto’s behalf as her comprehension of English was limited. He said he had instructed Ms Yamamoto to go to the fence and to lead if she could. He believed she had become over-excited and had followed his instructions too literally. It was only Ms Yamamoto’s 2nd ride in New Zealand.
--We take a starting point of 6 days suspension. We believe the breach to be at the upper end of mid range. Ms Moore clipped heels as a consequence of the inwards movement from Ms Yamamoto, which in essence was a 45 degree angled run across the field immediately after the horses left the gates. Jockey safety, as Mr Ching submitted, was compromised. We give a 1 day discount for Ms Yamamoto’s admission of the breach. As an experienced jockey (150 winners from 1500 raceday rides), she should have known better. We are pleased to learn that Mr Hazlett has undertaken to ensure that Ms Yamamoto is fully conversant with the Rules of Racing before riding at her next meeting. This will not be until the 2nd day at Blenheim. Ms Yamamoto is suspended from the end of racing today up to and including 23 April. This is 5 South Island days.
