Following the running of the Noel McCutcheon Farewell Mr N. Goodwin, Stipendiary Steward, sought a ruling under rule 912(1) as to whether investments on SORDID AFFAIR (H. Hooper) should be refunded due to the barrier blanket staying on the horse for 3-4 strides after the gates opened

--

Following the running of the Noel McCutcheon Farewell Mr N. Goodwin, Stipendiary Steward, sought a ruling under rule 912(1) as to whether investments on SORDID AFFAIR (H. Hooper) should be refunded due to the barrier blanket staying on the horse for 3-4 strides after the gates opened. SORDID AFFAIR finished fourth.

--

--

Mr T. Symes, the horse's trainer, Mr Hoopper and the starter, Mr R. Ripikoi, attended the hearing.

--

--

Mr Goodwin used a side on film of the start to show SORDID AFFAIR leave the stalls a length or two behind the field with the barrier blanket still on. The blanket fell away after 3-4 strides. Mr Hooper was uncertain as to why the horse was slow but he was aware the blanket had not come off ?at the jump?. Mr Symes believed any affect on the horse's chances was minor.

--

--

The Committee before ordering any refund must be satisfied that SORDID AFFAIR was denied a fair start and such occurrence materially prejudiced its chances. We believe that SORDID AFFAIR was slow away largely of its own accord and that the slower than expected shedding of the barrier blanket did not unduly restrict or hamper the horse. We concur with Mr Symes' view that any affect was minor. While there was some minor inconvenience to SORDID AFFAIR at the start we do not believe its chances were materially prejudiced by this incident and therefore decline to order a refund of investments on the horse.
