Code:

Hearing Type (Code):
thoroughbred-racing
Meet Title:
Cambridge JC - 20 November 2005
Race Date:
2005/11/20
Race Number:
Race 5
Decision: --
Following race 5 a protest was filed pursuant to Rule 876(1) when it was alleged by the informant, Stipendiary Steward Mr J Oatham, that RED CHIEF (L Cropp) or its rider placed fourth by the Judge interfered with the chances of REELY SMOKIN (T Harris) placed fifth by the Judge.
--
DECISION & REASON:
--Following race 5 a protest was filed pursuant to Rule 876(1) when it was alleged by the informant, Stipendiary Steward Mr J Oatham, that RED CHIEF (L Cropp) or its rider placed fourth by the Judge interfered with the chances of REELY SMOKIN (T Harris) placed fifth by the Judge.
----RED CHIEF was represented by Mr D Cave and REELY SMOKIN by Mr W Hillis.
----Mr W Robinson demonstrated the video of the horses running down the final straight. He showed that RED CHIEF ran out and made contact with REELY SMOKIN twice and then dictated its line, forcing Mr Harris to take hold of his mount and switch ground to avoid another runner. REELY SMOKIN then finished strongly, the margin being a neck between fourth and fifth. Mr Robinson did concede that on one occasion Miss Cheshire's mount could have had a small influence on the movement.
----Mr Harris confirmed Mr Robinson's observation.
----Ms Cropp said that RED CHIEF was a long striding horse and any movement was a chain reaction.
----The Committee agree that interference did take place with RED CHIEF moving out on to REELY SMOKIN and the dictating its line. We consider that this interference was serious enough to affect the chances of REELY SMOKIN finishing in a better place given the margin of a head and the way REELY SMOKIN ran to the line. Consequently we uphold the protest and the final placings now are:
----1st 13 NIARLA
--2nd 10 CARNEGIE SALAD
--3rd 3 OUR FIRST CHANCE
--4th 6 REELY SMOKIN
--5th 2 RED CHIEF
