Following the running of Race 2 an information was lodged alleging a breach of rule 871 (1) (d) in that apprentice jockey M.Tanaka the rider of Hanami allowed his mount to shift inward when not clear of Islay’s Gold J.Parkes causing that runner to check.
Following the running of Race 2 an information was lodged alleging a breach of rule 871 (1) (d) in that apprentice jockey M.Tanaka the rider of Hanami allowed his mount to shift inward when not clear of Islay’s Gold J.Parkes causing that runner to check.
----
Mr.Tanaka admitted the breach and was represented by trainer Mr. H.Matthews.
----
Mr. Davidson asked Mr. Goodwin (Stipendiary Steward) to show the incident on the available videos. Soon after the start Mr. Tanaka, from a wide draw, moved inwards towards the rail when not the required distance clear of the horse behind him ridden by J.Parkes. The video showed Mr.Tanaka looking to his inside whilst moving inwards so he was aware of the horses behind him. Mr. Parkes was forced to take evasive action on Islay’s Gold.
----
Mr. Davidson informed the committee that Mr. Tanaka had a previous charge of careless riding on the 27th April this year. He submitted that this was a mid-range offence and that the stipendiary stewards recommended a period of suspension of four days.
----
Mr.Tanaka asked the committee to consider a monetary penalty as his employer was overseas for three weeks and he had transferred to the Hamilton area for that time where he was beginning to pick up rides.
--Mr.Matthews added that Mr.Tanaka had understood his mistake and that in the current winter racing trainers would miss his 3kg apprentice claim if he was suspended.
----
Decision
----
--
The committee took into account all of the submissions put before it and agreed that the degree of carelessness shown by Mr. Tanaka was in the mid-range of severity. Mr. Parkes had to take a firm hold of his mount soon after the start when all riders were trying for the best possible position for their horses. In addition Mr.Tanaka was seen to look inwards and was therefore aware of other runners but did not correct his line.
--A monetary penalty in place of suspension would not be consistent with other careless riding charges and the committee could not find any particular or exceptional mitigating circumstances to allow this.
--Mr.Tanaka informed the committee of riding engagements to fulfill at Trentham on Saturday.
--Mr. Tanaka is suspended from riding from the conclusion of racing on Saturday 12th July until the conclusion of racing on Friday 18th July.
