Following the running of the Otaki ? Maori WFA Mr B Herd, rider of the winner SIR SLICK, admitted a breach of rule 871 (3). That rule prohibits celebratory gestures by riders prior to the winning post.

Following the running of the Otaki ? Maori WFA Mr B Herd, rider of the winner SIR SLICK, admitted a breach of rule 871 (3). That rule prohibits celebratory gestures by riders prior to the winning post.
--It was accepted that Mr Herd flourished his whip with some exuberance a stride or two short of the finish line. Mr Herd acknowledged the error of judgement in his timing.
--On the issue of penalty Mr George advised that riders, including Mr Herd, had been reminded of this rule at Te Rapa on 10 February. He called for a fine in the order of $200 - $400.
--Mr Herd thought some discretion was available where the ?celebration? occurred on or at the finish.
--The Committee acknowledged Mr Herd's candour in relation to the matter, which it considered to be at the lower end of the scale and, in imposing a fine of $300, invited him in future to restrain his jubilation and exuberance until after the finish.
