At the conclusion of Race 1 a protest was lodged by Stipendiary Steward Mr P T Knowles alleging fourth placed horse, GEORGINA CASTLETON, horse 7, galloped in excess of 50 metres in the home run, breaching Rule 870(3) and the Breaking Horses Regulations.

At the conclusion of Race 1 a protest was lodged by Stipendiary Steward Mr P T Knowles alleging fourth placed horse, GEORGINA CASTLETON, horse 7, galloped in excess of 50 metres in the home run, breaching Rule 870(3) and the Breaking Horses Regulations.
--Rule 870(3) states that any horse which breaks from its gait shall promptly regain it proper gait. The Breaking Horses Regulation (b) states that any horse which breaks from its gait within the final 200 metres of any race and continues on in the break for a distance of 50 metres, or greater, shall be deemed to be in breach of Rule 870(3) in that it has failed to promptly regain its proper gait.
--Film of the final 200 metres was shown by Mr Knowles GEORGINA CASTLETON attempts to improve along the passing lane from the trailing position and is observed to break at about the 150 metre mark and continues on in a gallop for at least 100 metres before settling.
--Driver of GEORGINA CASTLETON, P Davis, on observing the film did not contest the protest.
--Mr Knowles requested that the Committee disqualify GEORGINA CASTLETON from the race under Rule 1003(2).
--The Committee therefore considered the Protest to be upheld and that GEORGINA CASTLETON is disqualified for the race.
