--

Mr. Riddell admitted the breach.

--

Head-on films of the start showed Mr. Riddell jump from the extreme outside barrier. In looking to take up a position close to the rail he proceeded on a sharp inward movement when not clear of horses to his inside.  Ms Johnston was at the end of the resultant concertina effect and lost her position when forced to steady her mount.

--

Mr. Riddell said the bad angle of the side-on film perhaps made the incident look worse than it actually was however he conceded that he did come across sharply. At a previous start he had led on the horse and was attempting to do so again but from a very wide barrier. He did try to straighten his mount but found the damage had already been done.

--

Mr. Oatham said Mr. Riddell has had three careless riding charges in the last 12 months with two reasonably recent ones.  In his opinion the interference could be classed as mid-range.

--

Mr. Riddell advised the committee of riding commitments at Trentham next Saturday.

--

PENALTY
In coming to a decision on penalty the committee considered all of the submissions. We have given credit for Mr. Riddell’s admission of the breach but consider his riding record to be only fair.

--

Taking into account the degree of interference which we agree is in the mid-range it was our opinion that a six day suspension was an appropriate penalty however we have reduced this to five days due to Mr. Riddell missing the opportunity of riding in the million dollar race on Sunday at Ellerslie.  He is suspended from the conclusion of racing on Saturday 30th January until the conclusion of racing on Friday 5th February in effect 5 riding days.
