Following Race 5 an information was filed pursuant to Rule 530 (2) (b) when it was alleged by the Informant, Stipendiary Steward Mr A Coles, that jockey Mr N Downs used the whip in an excessive manner on his mount GO CAT

Following Race 5 an information was filed pursuant to Rule 530 (2) (b) when it was alleged by the Informant, Stipendiary Steward Mr A Coles, that jockey Mr N Downs used the whip in an excessive manner on his mount GO CAT.
--Mr Downs admitted the breach.
--Mr Coles demonstrated the video films and showed where Mr Downs struck his mount GO CAT approximately 25 times prior to the 200 metre mark.
--Mr Downs said he was not proud of the ride but he was aware of his mount being lazy and was endeavouring to get the best out of his mount.
--Stipendiary Steward Mr Williamson said it was clearly a case of excessive use with Mr Downs giving no respite to his mount as required. He produced Mr Downs' record, which showed no charge under this Rule in the last 12 months. He submitted a 4 day suspension was appropriate.
--Mr Downs told the Committee he had firm engagements at Paeroa on the 23rd July.
--PENALTY
--The Committee considered all submissions and before imposing penalty took into account the following :

- Mr Downs' guilty plea. --
- The degree of carelessness.
Accordingly, we impose a suspension to start after racing on the 23rd July and conclude after racing on the 31st July 2008 (4 days).
