Following the running of Race 2, Barry Dent Superannuation Consulting Handicap Trot, an information instigating a protest was filed by Stipendiary Steward, Mr N M Ydgren, against KING OF STRATHFIELD (M P Jones), placed 5th by the judge, on the ground of breaking from its gait “shortly after the start”.

Following the running of Race 2, Barry Dent Superannuation Consulting Handicap Trot, an information instigating a protest was filed by Stipendiary Steward, Mr N M Ydgren, against KING OF STRATHFIELD (M P Jones), placed 5th by the judge, on the ground of breaking from its gait “shortly after the start”.
--Mr N J H Munro, trainer of KING OF STRATHFIELD, had endorsed and signed the information form “I do not contest the protest”.
--Rule 870 (3) provides as follows:
Any horse which breaks from its gait shall promptly regain its proper gait.
Mrs K R Williams, Stipendiary Steward, showed video replays of the first 300-400 metres of the Race. She pointed out KING OF STRATHFIELD break from its gait shortly after the start of the 2600 metres standing start event and continue in a gallop for a distance of approximately 160 metres, Mrs Williams alleged. She used the track markers to support her allegation as to the distance over which the horse had galloped.
--Mr Ydgren sought disqualification of KING OF STRATHFIELD from the Race.
--The Committee was satisfied that KING OF STRATHFIELD had broken from its gait at the start and had continued on in a break for a distance of 150 metres or greater in breach of Rule 870 (3). The Committee also noted that Mr Munro did not contest the protest. The Committee was satisfied that it was appropriate to uphold the protest and to disqualify KING OF STRATHFIELD.
--Consequent upon the disqualification, the amended result for the Race is:

2nd 13 Clover Don
3rd 10 De Gaulle
4th 11 Spot of Gold
5th 2 Vatuvei
6th 8 Thrill Seeker
