ID: JCA20113
Hearing Type (Code):
harness-racing
Decision: --
Following the running of Race 1, PGG Wrightson Mobile Trot, an information was filed by Mrs K R Williams, Stipendiary Steward, against Licensed Open Driver, Miss K L McCormick, alleging that Miss McCormick, as the driver of WOODRIDGE in the Race, used her whip in an excessive manner in the run home.
--
DECISION AND REASONS:
--Following the running of Race 1, PGG Wrightson Mobile Trot, an information was filed by Mrs K R Williams, Stipendiary Steward, against Licensed Open Driver, Miss K L McCormick, alleging that Miss McCormick, as the driver of WOODRIDGE in the Race, used her whip in an excessive manner in the run home.
----Miss McCormick was present at the hearing of the information and admitted the breach. Accordingly, the breach was found proved.
----Mrs Williams said that Miss McCormick had advised the Stipendiary Stewards that she could not reach the horse with the whip and was not actually striking it. She submitted that it was not necessary for the horse to be hit to constitute a breach of the Rule, if it looks bad. The viewing public cannot differentiate. Mrs Williams alleged that Miss McCormick had used the whip approximately 36 times in the final 200-250 metres.
----Mrs Williams acknowledged that Miss McCormick had freely admitted the breach. She recommended a fine of $200.
----Miss McCormick confirmed that she could not reach the horse with the whip ? the noise of hitting the cart and the dust sheet and flicking him across the tail keeps him going. Otherwise,
----she said, the horse would stop very quickly. The horse is a big horse and "a long way out in the cart" to avoid hitting the footrests.
----The Committee, having regard to the submissions of the parties, fined Miss McCormick the sum of $200.
