Following the running of Race 10, The PGG Wrightson Oamaru Pace, an Information was filed against Mr G J Thomas, the driver of MY M J, alleging a breach of Rule 869 (2) (a), in that he used the whip excessively over the final stages of the event.
--Mr Thomas admits the breach.
--Using video footage, Stipendiary Steward Mr P Knowles demonstrated Mr Thomas striking MY M J 17 times in the run home without a break. Mr Knowles stated that this action was excessive. MY M J was in front and continued on to win convincingly.
--Mr Thomas stated that he had driven to win, however conceded that the horse did not need the final two or three strikes.
--Mr Knowles requested that the standard fine of $200 would be appropriate in this case.
--In assessing penalty the Committee took into account that Mr Thomas has no previous breach of this rule and that he has openly admitted that his actions looked bad.
--Mr Thomas is fined $200 and reminded of his obligations when using the whip.
