Decision: Ms Knight admitted a breach of R 871(3) in that she made a celebratory gesture when winning race 8 on LOTUS.
Ms Knight admitted a breach of R 871(3) in that she made a celebratory gesture when winning race 8 on LOTUS. The gesture was either right on the line or 1/2 a stride before it. The stipendiary steward stated it was right at the lowest end of the scale for a breach of this nature. We agree. Ms Knight’s hand can be seen to commence to rise slightly at the time LOTUS crosses the line. It was, as everyone agrees, a slight misjudgment.

Mr Harris has said he wants this to be a learning experience for Ms Knight. Ms Knight has apologised to the Committee for her actions, putting it down to her excitement as this was her first South Island winner. She had had 2 wins in the North Island but these were over a year ago. She had had about 40 rides in total.

Mr Davidson asked for a fine of around $100. We were initially attracted to this penalty but having regard to Ms Knight’s admission of the breach, her candour before the Committee, the fact that she is clearly willing to learn from the experience of being in the room for the first time, and especially the extremely low grade nature of the breach, we have decided to find the charge proved and to impose no penalty. The fact of the breach will be placed on Ms Knight’s record. Ms Knight was reminded of her obligations under the Rules of Racing.
