Mr Skerrett you have admitted a breach of rule 866(1)(c), in that you failed to ride your mount, MACY GREY out to the finish when it had a chance of finishing in 5th place.
--
Mr Skerrett you have admitted a breach of rule 866(1)(c), in that you failed to ride your mount, MACY GREY out to the finish when it had a chance of finishing in 5th place.
----Mr Ching has demonstrated on the videos that you have relaxed some 4 strides from the finish and that right on the line you realised you were going to get beaten for 5th and became urgent again but it was too late. The stake for 5th was $400.
----Mr Skerrett you have said that you were working on the horse the entire race. It had settled at the rear of the field and you had been riding hands and heels to get the horse to produce its best. You said that rather than MACY GREY finishing stoutly, the other horses had tired to a greater extent than you had realised.
----Mr Ching said Mr Skerrett had had no breaches of this rule since he had returned to riding and generally his conduct was excellent from the stipendiary stewards' perspective. Mr Skerrett you have said that you do not wish to be suspended as you are intending to ride at Riccarton. Mr Ching has accepted that the matter can be dealt with by way of a fine.
----Mr Skerrett you have an exemplary record, with respect to this rule, and you estimate you have had over 200 rides this season.
----We balance against your ready admission of the breach and exemplary record, the fact that your error has cost the connections the sum of $400. Earlier this season in the case of Ms J Cameron we were faced with a similar breach of this rule. On that occasion we imposed a fine of $250, and in the interests of consistency we impose a similar fine upon you. We also take the opportunity to remind you of your obligations under the Rules of Racing.
