Auckland RC - 27 January 2008
Race Date:
2008/01/27
Race Number:
Race 3
Decision:
Following Race 3 a protest was lodged pursuant to Rule 876 (1) by the informant, Mr C Ormsby, rider of the 4th horse KALANAGRA. He alleged that CATILLION, placed 2nd by the judges, interfered with the chances of his mount in the home straight.
Following Race 3 a protest was lodged pursuant to Rule 876 (1) by the informant, Mr C Ormsby, rider of the 4th horse KALANAGRA. He alleged that CATILLION, placed 2nd by the judges, interfered with the chances of his mount in the home straight.
----
All connections were informed of the protest. The margin between 3rd and 4th was a short neck.
----
Present at the enquiry were :
----
KALANAGRA : Rider C Ormsby, Trainer G Shirley, Owners D Ha and A Mehta.
----
CATILLION : Rider L Innes, Trainer W Hillis.
----
Mr Ormsby demonstrated the video films and showed where CATILLION moved out and dictated the line of his mount KALANAGRA. He believed the movement was 4 horse widths. He said he had to take hold of his mount and he was denied the chance to stretch out.
----
The trainer of KALANAGRA, Mr G Shirley, agreed with Mr Ormsby and said it could have cost him 3rd place.
----
Mr L Innes, rider of CATILLION, said he couldn’t see where Mr Ormsby stopped riding his mount. He also stated the 3rd horse, BELLA RENZA, came from 5 lengths behind the 4th horse and was finishing very fast.
----
Mr W Hillis, trainer of CATILLION, said KALANAGRA did not change ground through CATILLION moving out.
----
Chief Stipendiary Steward Mr C George said that between the 300 and 200 metre mark CATILLION did move out approximately 6 horse widths which did hamper KALANAGRA. He also said that from the 200 metre mark KALANAGRA was not inconvenienced.
----
DECISION :
----
The Committee carefully considered all evidence and reviewed the video films.
----
While it was obvious to the Committee that CATILLION did move out and inconvenience KALANAGRA in the home straight, we do not believe that was sufficient to affect the chances of KALANAGRA finishing in a better place. Relevant in this decision was the fast finish of the 3rd horse, BELLA RENZA, who came from approximately 5 lengths behind KALANAGRA. It was also evident that Mr Ormsby did not stop riding at any stage and he did not have to change ground.
----
Accordingly we dismiss the protest and the judge’s placings shall stand.
