--

Under Rule 871 (3) an information was filed alleging that Ms C Tetzlaff, rider of COUP CHRISTCHURCH, made a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.

--

Stipendiary Steward Mr S Ching commenced by highlighting the incident on video film.

--

Ms Tetzlaff (who was supported by Mr Pitman, Trainer) explained that she had got a little carried away with the 'winning moment' - that she was very excited - this being only her fifth winning ride. Mr Pitman stated that Ms Tetzlaff was showing 'natural winning exuberance' and that he was sure that she would learn from the experience. He explained that apprentices got very few rides on Mr Coupland's horses and that actually winning on one added to the excitement.

--

DECISION

--

The committee found the charge proven, and in considering penalty asked Mr Ching about any previous convictions. Ms Tetzlaff had only had approximately 30 previous rides and had no previous history of offences of this type. Mr Ching suggested that in this case a fine of between $200 - $400 would be appropriate. The committee felt that a fine of $250 was appropriate.

--

The committee took the following into account :

--
    --
  1. Riding record.
  2. --
  3. Guilty plea.
  4. --
  5. An apprentice jockey's youthful exuberance.
  6. --
  7. Supporter from Mr Pitman (trainer).
  8. --
  9. The stake of the race.
--

Ms Tetzlaff was reminded of her obligations as a professional jockey.
