Race 5
Decision:
Following the running of Race 5, Mr L McFarlane was charged with careless riding under Rule 871 (1) (d).
--
DECISION & REASON
--Following the running of Race 5, Mr L McFarlane was charged with careless riding under Rule 871 (1) (d). The information alleged that L McFarlane, the rider of WILLANDRA PRINCE, allowed his mount to shift in near the 800 tightening DIAMONDSAREFOREVER, ridden by S Houston, VAN WINKLE ridden by J Gillies and IMANELBE ridden by T Hazlett, who clipped heels and blundered.
--Mr McFarlane admitted the breach.
--Stipendiary Steward Mr George called on Mr Barnsley to outline the incident on video. Two views showed Mr McFarlane racing approximately four horse widths off the fence when he shifted inwards causing interference to horses on his inside, the most severely affected being Mr Hazlett closest to the fence. His horse clipped heels and stumbled.
--Mr George told the committee that while Mr McFarlane's inward movement may not have been over many horse widths the consequences of his actions justified a suspension as he came very close to causing a fall.
--Mr McFarlane's riding record did not show any recent charges under this rule and Mr George added that Mr McFarlane rides all over the North Island.
--Mr McFarlane concurred with Mr George in that he had been careless and agreed that the penalty must reflect his actions.
--PENALTY
--In coming to a decision on penalty the committee took into account all of the submissions put before it including Mr McFarlane's frank admission of the breach and his very good riding record.
--It is our opinion that a suspension is warranted due to the consequences of the interference Mr McFarlane caused. The concertina effect to the horses on his inside nearly caused IMANELBE to fall.
--Mr McFarlane was suspended from riding from the conclusion of racing on Wednesday July 4th until the conclusion of racing on Wednesday July 11th.
