Ms Lawson, the rider of WAGAMI placed 4th by the Judge alleged that OUR BEECEE, placed 3rd by the Judge, interfered with chances of her horse some 200 metres from the finish contrary to rule 876(1) and sought relegation of OUR BEECEE. The margin between 3rd and 4th was a length and a half. She demonstrated on the video that she was hindered by OUR BEECEE drifting over into her line. She said there was contact and that this had cost her momentum. She acknowledged that the margin was a length and a half but said she had lost at least that margin as a result of the interference. She said she had not gone for her horse before the interference as she was holding it up for a final run. She said she had been bumped and had had to balance her horse and that her horse had finished on better than OUR BEECEE.
----Mr Laking agreed he had come in and had cut across the line of Ms Lawson. He said Ms Lawson had not gone for her horse at this time even though she had had every opportunity to do so. Mr Kennedy, trainer, spoke on Mrs Stevenson's behalf. He disputed Ms Lawson's contention that WAGAMI had finished better than OUR BEECEE.
----Mr Ching, stipendiary steward, said it was necessary to have regard to where the interference occurred, its severity, and the 1 1/2 length margin.
----We accept that interference was caused to Ms Lawson's mount and that the cause of this interference was Mr Laking drifting inwards into Ms Lawson's line. Ms Lawson's mount had to ease, was briefly unbalanced, and did finish on fairly over the last 150 metres or so. However the margin was a length and a half and we do not believe that WAGAMI would have finished ahead of OUR BEECEE, which was also finishing well, had there been no interference. In these circumstances we exercise our discretion not to relegate OUR BEECEE. The placings are as the horses crossed the line.
