Mr Keast is charged with careless driving. He is alleged to have shifted inwards abruptly while driving 'Mach’s Terminator' with approximately 250m to run, thereby checking 'Algrancobowjoel' (G Smith) which in turn checked 'Cullens Lady' (B Orange).
Mr Keast admitted the charge, countersigned the information and did not attend the hearing.
Mr Renault replayed the incident which showed Mr Keast move inwards abruptly onto Mr Smith’s drive, causing Mr Smith to hold and check his horse, which then caused Mr Orange (on Mr Smith’s inner) to do likewise.

Mr Renault submitted that Mr Keast was an experienced licensed horseman who drove at least one horse per Canterbury meeting. Mr Renault submitted, having regard to the JCA Penalty Guidelines, the start point was a $500 fine, which ought to be reduced to $300 in light of Mr Keast’s admission and his clear record over the preceding 12 months.
Mr Keast had countersigned the information where Mr Renault had indicated that he would be seeking a fine of $300.00. That is taken as Mr Keast’s agreement to a fine in that amount.
