R#5

Decision:

In light of her admission we find the charge proved.

Penalty:

Miss Edmeads' apprentice jockey’s licence is suspended from the completion of riding today up to and including the 24th April. This includes meetings at Riccarton on the 18th April, Otago on the 22nd April and Blenheim on the 24th April (three South Island days).

Miss Edmeads is reminded of her obligations under the Rules of Racing.

Facts:

Following the running of race # 5 the DALE HORRELL FARRIER RATING 75 Stipendiary Steward Mr M Davidson lodged an information under Rule 638(1) (d) alleging that Ms A Edmeads allowed her mount The Gallant Girl to shift inwards over the concluding stages crowding Werribee on to Mels Evie.

Miss Edmeads admitted the breach and appeared at the hearing with co-trainer Mr Dennis.

Mr Davidson had Mr Oatham, Stipendiary Steward; demonstrate the breach on the video. The head on angle showed Miss Edmeads displaying considerable effort to keep The Gallant Girl straight for most of the run down the home straight. However, within 50 metres of the finishing post, she has allowed her mount to drift in, causing the crowding referred to in the charge. The movement of The Gallant Girl and the resulting interference was plainly visible from all angles on the video.

Miss Edmeads explained that The Gallant Girl is a difficult ride, having a tendency to hang badly in the run home especially if Ms Edmeads looked to ride her out. This was clear enough from the video and the clear evidence of Ms Edmeads working hard to keep the horse straight for most, but unfortunately not all, of the run to the finishing post.

Submissions for Penalty:

Mr Davidson acknowledged that The Gallant Girl is not the easiest of rides and that Miss Edmeads only lost control and was careless within the last 50 metres or so of the finishing post. Accordingly, Mr Davidson accepted that this was careless riding at the low end of the scale and submitted that a suspension of three days was appropriate.

Miss Edmeads’ record includes two suspensions within the last 12 months namely a suspension of three days for careless riding dated 12 October 2014 and six days for careless riding dated 21 December 2014.

Miss Edmeads did not disagree with the Stewards' submissions.

Reasons for Penalty:

Having regard to Miss Edmeads' actual carelessness, her immediate admission of the breach, her candour during the hearing itself and the fact that, despite her record, this was offending at the low end of the scale, we believe the matter can be dealt with by way of a suspension of three days. We do not believe a fine is appropriate given Ms Edmeads' two suspensions for careless riding during the latter half of 2014.
